International
Health Care Ethics Research Team (IHERT)
Malloy (PI) and
Hadjistavropoulos were initially funded by SSHRC in
2000 to explore the content of ethical codes of the
Canadian Psychological Association, the Canadian
Nursing Association, and the Canadian Medical
Association as well as the value statements from
Canadian hospitals. They also surveyed physicians
and psychologists with regard to their ethical
ideology and explored the impact of codes of ethics
and hospital value statements on decision-making
behaviour of medical residence. Several
peer-reviewed papers and one book chapter resulted
from this SSHRC grant (e.g., Ethics & Behaviour,
Canadian Psychology, & the Canadian Journal of
Nursing Research). In addition, a conference
abstract was presented.
Hadjistavropoulos
(PI), Malloy and their research team were then
awarded a New Emerging Team Grant (2002) from the
Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR)
entitled "Implementation and Evaluation of a Pain
Assessment and Treatment Program for Seniors'. This
grant is designed to a) Systematically assess and
identify pain among seniors in the community who
have medically complex problems; b) systematically
assess and identify pain among seniors with dementia
living in long-term care; c) systematically assess
and identify pain among seniors receiving home care
in the community; d) develop, implement and evaluate
psychosocial and health interventions for the
prevention and treatment of pain in seniors that can
be utilized by patients and caregivers in a variety
of settings; and e) develop ethical and professional
guidelines for assessing and treating pain in
seniors.
The research team is
now in the process of analysing data for the
completed Physician Ethics project and is nearing
completion of the qualitative data collection for
the Nurse Ethics project.
